This date symbolizes freedom to millions of Americans and should be honored. Our country was founded on ideals that were far from realized at the time of Independence or the later adoption of the Constitution. A horrific war was fought to further those ideals and as Lincoln said to move us to “a more perfect union”. The great leaders of our country have always accepted that we were on a difficult journey to those ideals. Leaders rose again during the civil rights movement and allowed a long delayed but profound transformation of our country. Each advance has been met with resistance and counter-reactions against those ideals. We now live during a period of forceful resistance to our ideals which will demand all who cherish our country’s ideals, the journey toward “a more perfect union” and “the pursuit of happiness” to step up and defend the ideals in words and deeds.
